CUBERS world premiere at Atlantic Film Festival

Halifax, N.S. Aug. 27, 2008. The feature documentary, CUBERS, will have its world premiere at the 28th Atlantic Film Festival on Sunday, September 14 at 9:30pm at Empire Park Lane Cinemas in Halifax.

CUBERS is a story of obsession and the need to belong set against the backdrop of two World Rubik's Cube Championships. CUBERS is also a universal story about the drive of the human spirit to overcome great obstacles while achieving the seemingly impossible. Battling to win; battling to fit in. For these braniac misfits, the World Rubik's Cube Championship isn't just a game.

CUBERS travels to Budapest, Paris, Orlando, Toulouse, Tel Aviv, Chicago, Toronto and beyond while delving into the minds and lives of speed-cubers, people who can solve the puzzle in under 20 seconds. "This film took more than five years to make,” says director, Richard LeBlanc. "I had no idea it would take so long, but in the end, persistence paid off as I discovered characters whose journeys were sometimes sad, sometimes funny, and often surprising. I've traveled the globe to make CUBERS and I’m ecstatic to bring it to Halifax for its first public screening."

Richard's feature film script Counting the Days was part of the Scripts Outloud programme at the Atlantic Film Festival where he also premiered his short film Liptsick.

CUBERS will have its television premiere on CBC's The Lens in the fall and then air on Biography, G4 Tech, Access, the Canadian Learning Network and the Saskatchewan Learning Network. CUBERS is produced by Walter Forsyth and was made possible with generous support from the CBC, the Canadian Television Fund, Film Nova Scotia, the Government of Canada, the Government of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund, the Linda Joy Media Arts Society, PS Production Services Atlantic and the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative.
